Project Engineer (Contract) – Barceloneta, PR

Qualification requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical)
  • Significant construction experience in active, complex industrial facilities. Including safety elements.
  • Demonstrated owner side or client facing experience in GMP regulated or pharmaceutical environments during construction activities.
  • Proven track record working in a GC embedded role or closely integrated with general contractors on large capital projects.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills

 General Responsibilities/Tasks

  1. Provides day‑to‑day, field‑focused construction leadership on an active GMP manufacturing site, ensuring that construction activities are planned and executed in alignment with AbbVie’s standards, regulatory requirements, and site operations.
  2. Acts as the primary interface between the general contractor, AbbVie PM, and site operations, integrating construction with GMP manufacturing expectations, and proactively identifying and controlling risks at the construction/operations interface.
  3. Strong presence in the field to verify that work methods, permits, and controls are implemented as planned and adjusted in real time as site conditions change.
  4. Ensures construction work respects GMP constraints (cleanliness, segregation, utilities, shutdowns, etc.)

 Technical skills:

  1. Strong competence in field‑level construction risk assessment (cranes, lifts, hot work, confined space, energization, excavation, etc.).
  2. Experience developing and reviewing JHAs/JSAs and permit‑to‑work processes.
  3. Ability to interpret and apply OSHA and relevant EHS regulations, plus site‑specific and pharma/GMP EHS expectations.
  4. Familiarity with utilities and building systems common in GMP facilities (mechanical, electrical, process utilities) and their impact on both safety and operations.
  5. Understanding of GMP concepts (clean/dirty segregation, contamination control, validated systems, critical utilities, change control) and how construction work can impact them.
  1. Experience coordinating construction in or near live production environments, including shutdowns, tie‑ins, and work in controlled areas.

 Behavioral / working style:

  1. Field‑oriented, hands‑on presence—comfortable spending the majority of time in the work areas, not just in meetings or behind a desk.
  2. Strong communication and coaching skills with craft workers, supervisors, GC leadership, and owner teams.
  3. Ability to challenge and influence both contractors and owner stakeholders constructively when safety or GMP risks are identified.
  4. Organized and detail‑oriented, able to track actions, trends, and recurring issues and feed them back into planning.
  5. Comfortable operating as a bridge between AbbVie, A&E, the GC, and PM teams, translating owner expectations into practical field controls.
  6. Experience participating in or coordination meetings, constructability reviews, and incident/near‑miss investigations.
